Originaire de Victoriaville, l’histoire de Shawn Element, nouveau capitaine des Eagles du Cape Breton dans la LHJMQ, en ai une de dépassement de soi et de résilience. Repêché au 9e échelon par le Drakkar de Baie-Comeau en 2016, le jeune homme de 20 ans revient de loin. Malgré les embûches au cours de sa carrière, il n'a jamais perdu l'œil sur ses objectifs.
Le 14 octobre 2012, alors âgé de 12 ans à l'époque, le Victoriavillois subit une sérieuse blessure aucou. Il s’agit du genre de blessure pouvant freiner la carrière d'un joueur de hockey.
« Je me suis cassé le cou le 14 octobre 2012! Vertèbre C5 et C6 fracturé ainsi que C7 écrasé! Ma vertèbre C6 a été changée pour un os de ma hanche gauche. Le sport de contact était moins bien vu par mon médecin, mais dès le rétablissement bien effectué de mes vertèbres et la plaque de métal regroupant les 3 vertèbres, j'ai eu le feu vert! J'allais tout de même être vu sur 5 ans pour s'assurer que rien ne bouge, ou qu'il n'y ai pas de complication. 9 mois après ma blessure, j'ai pu refaire du contact et depuis rien ne m'arrête depuis ce jour. »

Depuis les débuts de Shawn dans le circuit Courteau en 2016, on aperçoit une progression constante dans son jeu.
« Durant mes 3 années à Baie-Comeau mon jeu était beaucoup plus axé sur être fiable défensivement, j'avais beaucoup de mission défensive ce qui m'a fait grandement apprendre à être un meilleur joueur dans chacune des zones! Je ne veux pas dire que j'avais perdu le côté offensive en moi, mais en étant échangé à Bathurst, celui-ci a ressorti et en combinant mon côté défensif, ça m’a permis d’être encore meilleur qu'avant! »
Après des saisons de 13, 19 et 33 points à Baie-Comeau, le jeune joueur reçut une bonne nouvelle, une invitation au camp des Blackhawks de Chicago. Cependant, suite à une erreur administrative, il ne fut pas en mesure de s'y rendre. La direction des Blackhawks aurait oublié d'envoyer les papiers officiels à la LNH, rendant la venue de Shawn impossible.
En début de saison 2019, Shawn est échangé aux Titans d’Acadie-Bathurst. D’abord, il fut nommé 22e capitaine de l'organisation du Titan. Par la suite, il explosa pour sa meilleure saison en carrière. Il marqua 34 points en 32 parties, avant d’être échangé aux Eagles à Noël pour compléter sa saison avec 62 points en 61 parties.
« J'ai été énormément déçu face à la situation, c'est un rêve de participer à un camp NHL et à cause d'une erreur administrative, je n'ai pas pu avoir ma chance… Décevant, mais je ne peux rien y faire! C'est pourquoi j'ai utilisé ça comme source de motivation afin de les faire regretter ou de les forcer à me repêcher lors du prochain repêchage! Le repêchage du 6-7 octobre est le dernier que je suis admissible. J'espère être repêché, mais sinon l'objectif est d'avoir une grosse saison et de signer un contrat en cours d'année! Je sais que je peux y arriver! »
En ce début de saison 2020-2021, Shawn semble plus motivé que jamais et son début de saison ne ment pas. Le joueur de centre de 20 ans possède une fiche de 5 passes en 2 matchs cette saison (en date du 7 octobre). Il semble bel et bien vouloir se démarquer afin d'obtenir une chance avec une équipe de la LNH. Son équipe s’est inclinée face aux Mooseheads vendredi dernier, avant de prendre sa revanche le lendemain avec une victoire de 5-4 contre Halifax. Il récolta 4 passes dans la victoire.
